Defining Accessibility

Role: Volunteer Instructional Designer and eLearning Developer

Tools Articulate Storyline 360, Canva, Google Docs, Eduflow, H5P

Origin:  This project was a volunteer opportunity I took on with "Teaching: The Path the Learning and Development."  TPLD is currently developing a course for teachers transitioning into Instructional Design.  On my team, I took on the role of designing and developing a flow on accessibility.

ChallengeAccording to a LinkedIn survey of Hiring Managers, newly hired instructional designers who have transitioned out of teaching showed less knowledge, skill and/or experience in designing accessible learning experiences than they expected.

TPLD Project Overview

Project Overview

Data Analysis:  I took a piece of the LinkedIn Hiring Managers survey data and analyzed it.  I looked for specific skills, knowledge, or experiences that Hiring Managers identified as areas of need. I worked with my team of 5 and our team lead to identify our project plan for our flow.

Project Plan

Research:  Our team identified four 'flows' or modules based on our data analysis.  I researched my topic of 'Intro to Accessibility' for transitioning teachers.  While teachers may have a lot of experience providing accessible experiences in a classroom, they will need supplementation on how to ensure eLearning experiences are accessible.

Storyboard

Design:  I identified four measurable objectives that would be most important for transitioning teachers.  I developed assessment questions based on these objectives, then began building the storyboard.

Eduflow

Development:  This project is held on Eduflows LMS.  I began to build in Eduflow to ensure my design would maximize all the learning tools available in Eduflow.  Given the limited interactivity of Eduflow, I will use their abundant embed and integration abilities to include Storyline 360 and H5P interactive activities.

Role: eLearning Developer

Time: 10 hours

Development:  After developing out the Storyline, I will get feedback from my teamFor the next iteration of this project, I will build out each assessment question to improve the user experience. I will include high-quality and low-quality examples of each concept to provide more practice activities. I will also ensure I have incorporated all the accessibility techniques I discuss.
